Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

“Me, Myself & Irene” might not immediately appear problematic, but a closer examination reveals concerning aspects. The movie revolves around a protagonist with schizophrenia, but its portrayal of the condition is problematic. The film perpetuates the misconception that schizophrenia involves having multiple personalities, which is inaccurate and contributes to misinformation. Additionally, the usage of taglines like “from mental to gentle” adds to the problematic nature of the portrayal.

In contemporary times, it’s not uncommon for individuals to express strong reactions when a movie is perceived as offensive, but this level of sensitivity wasn’t as widespread in the year 2000. Despite this, the National Alliance on Mental Illness took a stance and sent a strongly worded letter to Fox, urging them and Jim Carrey to create a public service announcement (PSA) addressing schizophrenia-related concerns. However, it appears that the studio did not acquiesce to this demand.
