Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
“Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” fell short as a movie for several notable reasons, and if it were produced in the present day, it would likely not be met with tolerance. A particular scene towards the movie’s conclusion where Robin intervenes to rescue Maid Marian from the Sheriff stands out. Inexplicably, this scene was intended to be “humorous” as the Sheriff attempts to impose himself on Marian at the altar. In the 1990s, one would expect society to have understood that such content is far from comedic.
Even if one were inclined to view the film in defiance of its critics, it would still be a challenging recommendation to make. Beyond any potential content concerns, the movie itself is widely considered to be of subpar quality. Kevin Costner’s involvement in the film should arguably evoke a sense of regret, but not for the reasons that the critics of the movie might suggest.
